Why Is Chemotherapy Used To Treat Cancer?

Why Is Chemotherapy Used To Treat Cancer?

Although there are many ways to treat Cancer such as surgery, radiation, laser, and other methods, Chemotherapy is also one of the most common method to treat Cancer in patients diagnosed with it. Normally Chemotherapy means to treat any illness with drugs and is generally called as "chemo". The methods mentioned above do destroy the cancer cells but chemotherapy works and treats the entire body. It is also known as systemic therapy due to this factor.  If the cancer has spread in other parts of the body, chemotherapy can help prevent it to grow and worsen.
Below are a few reasons why Chemotherapy should be used as a method to help cancer patients:

1. To Cure Cancer

Chemotherapy helps cure Cancer if caught at an early stage. It shrinks the cells and stops the cancer from spreading and the person goes into remission.

2. Control the disease

If it is diagnosed at later stages, this method can still help control and manage the disease. It also adds a few more years in a cancer patient's lifespan if there is no hope of cure.

3. Manage the symptoms

During the severe stage of cancer, even controlling the illness maybe very demanding for you and your family. But easing the symptoms is done using Chemotherapy. The comfort provided by this method is called palliative care or palliation. This is the last resort when chemotherapy fails to cure or control the disease.

The drugs used in chemotherapy differs according to the type of cancer, age of the patient, stage of cancer, and other health issues that the individual may suffer from.  The doses of the drugs also differ depending on the patients. Try to always include chemotherapy despite its side effects as it may actually be very worth it in the long run.
