Cancer is a disease that usually affects the
quality of life in a drastic manner. It is most often fatal and reduces your
time to live due to the weakening of the immunity system. More so than often,
almost up to 60% of patients with cancer undergo one kind of a surgery or
another to ensure that they have a few more years added to their life. In many
cases, surgery and removal of tumour also helps put the patient in remission.
It is generally combined with radiation or chemotherapy for better results.
There are many kinds of surgery depending on
the type and severity of the condition. Some of them are listed below:
1.
Curative Surgery where the surgeon removes the tumour
from the body especially if it hasn’t spread to other organs, yet. This is done
when the tumour is generally benign and the process is simple. It is followed
up by chemotherapy to ensure that all the cancerous cells are removed from the
body.
2.
Reconstructive Surgery is when you try to return the body
to normal functioning after treatment. This is generally common in women who
have constructive surgeries on their breasts. Breast reconstructive surgery is
done in order to bring the breasts back to normal looking appearance. Other
reconstructive surgeries include face and testicular regions.
3.
Preventive Surgery is when you conduct a surgery to
prevent Cancer cells from occurring at a specific predisposed body part. Women
who have a family history of breast cancer and are at a higher risk can chose
to get their breasts removed in order to prevent the disease from
spreading. Colon cancers are also
prevented by removing the polyps that may be pre-cancerous.
4.
Supportive Surgeryis done to help other kind of
treatments for cancer.
5.
Palliative Surgeryis done to improve the quality of
life and not to cure or treat cancer.
