Key factors and treatments of cancer

Cancer is a very widespread disease that doesn’t have any one particular treatment procedure. Many ways are used to treat cancer, sometimes in combination. The mode of treatment depends on the person’s medical condition and the type of cancer he has.

The key factors that determine the type of cancer are –
  • Type of cancer
  • Stage of the cancer
  • Age of the person
  • General health of the person
  • Other disorders the person has
  • Lifestyle of the person
  •  

Some of the treatments used in cancer are –
Tumour Board Evaluation
Nocancer treatment except emergency treatment is started without discussion of the case and planning of the treatment by the Tumour Board. The senior consultants of oncology exchange their views and create a treatment plan that will be followed in future.
Diagnostic Procedures –
There are many ways to diagnose cancer. After the diagnosis, a second opinion is taken from an expert. Accurate identification is necessary in cancer to choose the most effective treatment.
Radiation Therapy –
It is a non-invasive method of treatment which is suggested to 50 - 60% of cancer patients. It is the most effective and least traumatic among other treatments. It is combined with chemotherapy or surgery for better results.
Surgery –
Surgery is the oldest treatment for cancer. It is important for diagnosing and supporting cancer treatment. The type of surgery depends on the type of cancer. Surgeries are used in combination with other treatments for cancer.
Chemotherapies –
Chemotherapies and their side effects are managed well by experienced medical centres. Chemotherapy consists of use of drugs to ease the effects of cancer. Whether the dosages are normal or high depends on individual cases.
Palliative Care –
If cure of cancer is not possible, palliative care is given for the patient until the end of life. This assures the best quality of life until the patient dies. It includes psychological support for the person and his family. It helps in dealing with medical, physiological and psychological problems of cancer.
