Effectively managing the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation

Effectively managing the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation

The two most common and effective methods of treating cancer is chemotherapy and radiation. While sometimes both the process is applied together on a patient, at times either one of the two is used depending on the growth of cancerous cells within the patient.

Well, one very important thing that we need to remember is that both exposure to chemotherapy drugs and the radiation waves is not good in general for the human body because it disrupts its basic normal functions. Hence it is but common that patients experience a lot of side effects. Here are some effective ways through which you can manage these side effects:
  1. One of the most common effects of chemotherapy and radiation is diarrhoea. This is because of the fact the cells in our stomach lining are continuously dividing and are in the process of division, because of which they tend to get destroyed during the chemotherapy treatment. It goes back to normal after the treatment is over but during that time you might want to stay away from food that you see is causing problems.
  2. Try and have fruits as much as possible, possibly the tart ones because there is a high chance that you will develop a weird and metallic taste in your mouth, which can be controlled with time.
  3. Very common side effect of chemotherapy and particularly painful is constant vomiting and a nauseating feeling at all times. Sip fluids and keep yourself hydrated as much as possible and this too will go away once the treatment stops.
  4. Losing your appetite is a very common side effect. In order to be able to control that you will need to eat little food at short intervals so that your body is not devoid of the energy that it needs.
  5. Mouth sores are quite common as well which can be treated with the help of oral hygiene.

So, these are some of the ways to effectively manage the side effects that one has to deal with after chemo and radiation.
