Chemotherapy is generally a method used for treatment
of any disease using drugs. It is
especially useful for Cancer as it helps reduce the growth of the cancerous
cells. It is usually the first method that the doctors recommend as soon as an
individual is diagnosed with cancer. It affects
the entire body, hence is also referred to as systemic therapy. There are number of side effects that affect
the body, some of which you should be aware of if you are undergoing
Chemotherapy.
1. Damage of healthy blood cells
Along with destroying the cancer cells,
chemotherapy also damages blood cells such as white blood cells, red blood
cells and can also affect Platelets. Low count in these cells can cause variety
of problems as well.
2. Fatigue and weakness
Feeling tired after every session of
Chemotherapy? Don't let it get to your head, as it is a very common side effect
if you are undergoing treatment for Cancer. It can also cause a lot of pain in
various parts of the body that includes muscle pain, headaches, numbness
etc. Tiredness exists as the drug takes
effect. It can get better if the chemotherapy works in wiping out the cancer
cells from the body.
3. Cognitive dysfunction
Not just physically, cancer and its treatments
can cause a strain in your mental health as well. The effect of the drugs can
create some changes in memory and daily functioning. Attention span is lowered
and people have trouble concentrating on longer tasks.
Other side effects
include anaemia, nausea, neutropenia, vomiting, etc. It is always better to be
prepared as it can take a toll on your physical and mental health if you stress
about the side effects. Cancer itself is a tasking illness to take care
of. Try to channel out all the
negativity and concentrate on getting better.
