Effective cancer treatment requires not just one, but
many treatments together to be cured or made better. Malignant cancer diseases are
treated using radiotherapy, chemotherapy, advanced medical treatment and palliative
care to ease the disease and improve life quality, especially in terminally ill
patients.
Tests and treatments –
After a physician refers, tests and treatments are
begun in proper steps –
Diagnosis of the cancer is done and confirmed before
any form of treatment is initiated.
The specialists study and plan the treatment
as each individual case is different and needs different kind of treatment and
care.
When the treatment is planned, it is discussed with the
patient as well as his family members.
Usually, cancer treatment consists of imaging and
laboratory tests. Tissue, cell or bone biopsies are necessary for some people. Imaging
scans are required for planning radiotherapy.
Radiotherapy
–
This is a common treatment for cancer. It is given
externally with a radiation device. The modern technique is used based on the
patient's specific radiotherapy plan. There are several radiotherapy techniques
used in different cases and clinics. Sometimes, Radiotherapy is in the form of
isotope treatment. This consists of treatment using a radiological medication.
It is administered within body cavities or tissues.
Cancer
medications –
This is also a very common type of treatment used in
cancer cure. It includes cytotoxic agents, antibody and hormonal medications.
They are given in different combinations considering the type of cancer in
question. Stem cell transplant is used along with high-dose cancer medication
treatments. Also, drugs are recommended to relieve the adverse effects of certain
cancer treatments. Antiemetic drugs are used to prevent nauseaand blood cell
growth factors.
Cancer treatment doesn’t end in one sitting or
session. The treatment is often repeated until there is no trace of the
cancerous cells in the body. Many times, the patient has to undergo
radiotherapy a few times. Each treatment session lasts for a couple of minutes.
The Cancer drugs are administered as courses for 1–3 weeks. Today, the cancer
drug treatment is usually orally administered. These treatments are administered
at the outpatient clinics. Only special cases are asked to stay overnight for
observation.
