Understanding the basics of chemotherapy and how it is used to treat cancer

It is a known fact that chemotherapy is the way to go when it comes to effectively treating cancer. Well why do you think it is so? Do you know how chemotherapy takes place?

Well chemotherapy is basically the process of injecting certain drugs into the system through an injection, or through an intravenous drip or even through tablets and capsules. Such a method of treatment known as systemic treatment and it takes place over a period of time. Patients have to appear and reappear for chemotherapy treatments at regular intervals.

How does chemotherapy work?

Chemotherapy is no wonder drug or magic. It has a very simple method of operation. When a foetus begins to form within a uterus, the formation takes place through a process of cell division. Cell division is a collection of processes which leads to the formation of a new cell from a parent cell. As we grow up the process of cell division begins to decrease and some cells stop dividing altogether. Well a cancerous growth is detected it is actually a mass of cells which are constantly dividing and growing at a large number because it believes that the body is a hostile environment and it needs to produce cells of its same nature in order for the cells to survive. Well what chemotherapy drugs do is that they target the cells which are dividing and plan to kill them all by destroying them during the DNA replication or cell division process.

Why do we have side effects after chemotherapy?

There are a few healthy cells in our body which still do divide as we grow up, like the ones responsible for producing hair, etc., which might also get affected by the chemo drugs because they cannot distinguish which ones are the bad cells and which one are the healthy ones. Chemo will kill any cell that is in the process of cell division and hence we have side effects.

Now that you have a clear idea about what chemotherapy is and how it works, you will be able to understand the process of cancer treatment.
